La Rochelle è un comune francese capoluogo del dipartimento della Charente Marittima nella regione di Poitou-Charentes. Il suo porto è considerato uno dei più belli della Francia, con le splendide Torri e con una vista mozzafiato sull'Oceano Atlantico. Il porto ha anche goduto del favore delle isole prospicienti; anche in caso di maltempo un ponte, costruito nel 1988, permette di unire la terraferma all'isola di Ré. La città tra il XII e il XIII secolo fu il porto sull'Atlantico prediletto dai Templari. Traccia di questo passato si trova nella toponomastica di un quartiere che omaggia l'epopea templare.

Il mare gioca un ruolo importante nella vita cittadina. L'attività principale della città è sempre stata la pesca. Motivo di vanto è un importante museo marittimo dove è “approdata” anche la nave oceanografica Calypso, utilizzata per le sue esplorazione da Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Dal 1973 attracca ogni anno in città un bastimento carico di... cinema: qui si svolge, infatti, il Festival internazionale del cinema, secondo (in Francia) per importanza e numero di visitatori al Festival di Cannes.

Le tre torri del vecchio porto sorveglieranno il tuo soggiorno all' Hotel Première Classe La Rochelle. La Tours de la Lanterne (XII-XV secolo) serviva a controllare le navi che entravano nel porto, fungendo da punto di riferimento per i naviganti con il suo faro, il più antico della costa Atlantica. Diventò poi prigione per pirati. Le tracce dei passaggi corsari sono iscritte negli oltre 600 graffiti rimasti.

La Tour Saint-Nicolas (XIV secolo) costituisce, con la Tour de la Chaîne, l'ingresso al vecchio porto cittadino. La torre è legata a quella de la Chaîne proprio con una catena. Fu utilizzata come prigione per gli Ugonotti. Le due torri gemelle erano comandate da un capitano nominato annualmente. La tour de la Chaîne serviva a seguire e sorvegliare le barche nel porto e a riscuotere le tasse. Dal porto puoi, poi, partire per crociere verso l'Île d'Aix e Fort Boyard e altre isole, fortificazioni, spiagge.

In poco meno di 3 ore con il TGV puoi raggiungere Parigi e in 2 ore Tours e St-Pierre des Corps; il capoluogo Poitiers, inoltre, dista solo un'ora e venti. La stazione cittadina serve ottimamente anche Bordeaux, Nantes, e Limoges, Saintes e Angoulême. La città gode di un clima mite, favorito dall'influenza positiva della corrente del Golfo, molto simile a quello delle coste interne del mar Mediterraneo.

Vero vanto del trasporto cittadino sono le biciclette fin dal 1974, quando la città, prima in Francia, attivò un servizio gratuito d'utilizzo delle biciclette dal famoso colore giallo. Ovviamente le piste ciclabili sono all'altezza: 160 chilometri dentro la città e 80 chilometri tra le città della zona. Anche i trasporti pubblici sono stati adattati alle esigenze dei ciclisti.
