Did you know?

Following the 1815 Treaty of Versailles, France lost the Saar and the Savoie, where several mining engineering schools were located. At the time — right in the midst of the Industrial Revolution — practical knowledge of these fields was essential. To mitigate the loss of the schools, a new establishment was to be founded in a mining town. And so in 1816, Saint-Étienne became the site of the first École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in France. It became an engineering school in 1831.
