TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Nevers?

Two-day visit to Nevers
What to do in a week in Nevers?
Family vacation in Nevers
Although packed with art and heritage, Nevers is a small city that you can easily visit over the course of a short stay. Don’t miss the Ducal Palace right up on top of the hill, which is thought to be the first castle built in the Loire. Another must-see monument is Nevers Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with some incredible stained-glass windows. After a day of history and a night in your Première Classe hotel, a walk along the Ver-Vert path will take you along the Loire, with information about the wildlife and nature surrounding Nevers provided along the way.
A week in Nevers is the perfect opportunity to dive deeper into the city’s heritage. In addition to the must-see few, plenty of other buildings have made their mark on the city’s heritage, like the Église Saint-Pierre with its fabulous Italian frescoes, the Chapelle Sainte-Marie and its original Baroque façade, and the Porte du Croux and Goguin Tower, some of the last remaining traces of the city walls. Head out of your Première Classe hotel for a stroll along the canal running to the side of the Loire, crossing the Nièvre and paving the way for you to explore unspoiled villages, Roman churches, and idyllic countryside.
Lush and peaceful, the tiny city of Nevers is the ideal destination for a family stay in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Head out of your Première Classe hotel and off for a fantastic day in the Val Maraîcher de la Baratte. This area has been farmland for centuries, and is overflowing with kitchen and flower gardens, fountains, bathing spots, and rustic farmhouses. If it’s culture you’re after, visit the Musée Nivernais de l'Education, home to a reconstructed early 20th-century classroom. Lastly, take a trip to Apremont-sur-Allier in Cher, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France, and explore the incredible floral park.

Discover the gastronomy of Nevers

Keen to experience the cuisine of Nièvre while in Nevers? After breakfast at your Première Classe hotel, head out to the local restaurants to find menus overflowing with fish-based dishes, thanks to the abundance of life in the region’s rivers. A classic Nevers dish is carpe à la nivernaise, where the fish is poached in a red wine and tomato sauce. After your stay, your suitcase is bound to be stuffed with treats on your way home — like négus, a boiled sweet hiding a soft caramel center for which the town is famous. Nougatine, a crisp caramel and almond candy, is another local specialty dating back to the 19th century.

The festivities that make Nevers tick

Enjoy Nevers’ rich cultural scene with a stay in its Première Classe hotel. In July, Les Z’accros d’ma Rue fills the streets of Nevers with music, dance, and performances spanning every genre imaginable. The Nevers à Vif festival has brought the town alive with rock and electro rhythms in early November every year since 1986. A few days after, D’Jazz Nevers has fans of the genre moving and grooving to top jazz musicians. If you prefer the music of a motor running, the Magny-Cours racetrack — a one-time host of the F1 Grand Prix — still holds major events like the Superbike and Supermoto World Championships.

An interesting fact about Nevers

St. Bernadette is a big part of Nevers’ religious heritage. She was still only a little girl when she is said to have seen the Virgin Mary in a cave in Lourdes. By the time she was 14 she had become a national figure, and pilgrims would flock to Lourdes to see her. The constant attention would drive her to join the St. Gildard convent in Nevers in 1866, where she lived as a nun until her death. Are you not yet ready for your getaway to western Bourgogne-Franche-Comté to end? Book a room in one of our affordable Première Classe hotels in Auxerre, Avallon, Beaune or Mâcon.
