Leisure activities for the whole family in Mâcon
A relatively small city, Mâcon is the perfect bite-size destination for a weekend family getaway or short work trip. Check out its beautiful city center, with coloured building that spirit you away to the south. In Mâcon’s old town neighborhood of Saint-Antoine, gaze up at the Cathédrale Vieux-Saint-Vincent and the amazing Wooden House, surely one of the oldest buildings in the city. After a peaceful night’s sleep in your Première Classe hotel and an energy-packed breakfast, why not treat yourself to a walk along the banks of the Saône and across the Saint-Laurent Bridge.
If you’re in Mâcon for a long business trip or family stay, make the most of your time here to explore even more of the city and its surroundings. Head to the Musée des Ursulines to admire collections of archaeological finds, ethnography and fine arts from around the region in a former convent, as well as a collection dedicated to Lamartine. The poet once owned the Château de Saint-Point, only half an hour away from your hotel and also open to visitors. Finally, the Mâconnais region is brimming with villages to explore: Brancion, Milly-Lamartine and Blanot are among them, where medieval architecture, hills and vineyards add to the charm of the surrounding landscape.
Enjoying a family vacation to Mâcon? You’ll be happy to hear that there are plenty of walks and fun things to do with the kids there, thanks to its lush green surroundings. The Voie Verte is a great way to explore the idyllic countryside and must-see historical sites of the Saône-et-Loire by bike, on a dedicated cycle path. There’s also the Parc des Oiseaux — the largest bird park in France — just 25 miles away in Villars-les-Dombes, which is home to thousands of amazing birds from all over the world. Are you already thinking about coming back to Bourgogne-Franche-Comté for your next escape? You’ll also find affordable Première Classe hotels in Auxerre, Besançon and Nevers, and that’s not all...

Did you know?

Lamartine is not the only poet born in Mâcon. Antoine Bauderon de Sénecé and Jean-Claude Villain are countrymen of his too, albeit less well-known. Although Bauderon de Sénecé lived 93 years and saw both the 17th and 18th centuries, it was only in the second half of his life that he set to work publishing his poetry. Villain, meanwhile, is a modern poet. He was born in Mâcon in 1947, although has since moved away from the area. Book a room in our reasonably-priced Première Classe hotel and get ready to explore Mâcon’s history.
