In the heartlands of Ariège, the city of Pamiers lies on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, which passes not far from your hotel. Feel free to walk a little of the route — it offers a lovely interlude in unspoiled natural surroundings. You’ll also get to see the Église du Vieux-Mas and its medieval garden. Another great way to explore the city is by its charming canals, and with a visit to Pamiers Cathedral. The surrounding area is home to a number of castles. Set out from your hotel room, and be ready to explore the Château de Foix, Château de Montségur and many others in no time at all.
Keen to explore more of Pamiers? A longer stay in our hotel gives you the time to stroll through the city along the canals, and take in the urban surroundings where real gems hide in plain sight. The many orders in Pamiers have left it full of prestigious convents and abbeys. Visit the Carmel chapel, which was once used by the sisters of the order of St. Teresa of Ávila. There’s the Tour de la Monnaie, too, where copper coins — known as “Guilhem” — were struck until 1422.
Is there a family vacation to Pamiers on the horizon? Your hotel is the perfect base for getting stuck into all sorts of activities, like canoeing and treetop adventure courses. Head to the bird reserve in Mazères — it’ll have visitors of all ages open-eyed with wonder. The area of 250 acres is home to some incredible wildlife. Continue your adventure in the great outdoors with a trip to Saint-Amadou. The town’s sentier de l’eau winds its way through springs and fountains. You can walk for anything from 30 minutes to two and a half hours. Not far from there, the Eglise de Vals is a stunning sight, with its entry carved into the rock.

Flavors and culinary specialties of Pamiers

So you’ve enjoyed an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the hotel — how about treating yourself to some local Pamiers goodies? The region has two culinary specialties. The first are its small Pamiers coco beans, farmed in the Ariège Valley. These are most often found in cassoulets. The second is its Flocons d'Ariège, which will have you melting with joy. These delicious artisan candies have a soft hazelnut praline center wrapped in a meringue shell. Flocons d’Ariège are a common sight in patisserie and food store windows, and make wonderful souvenirs to take home after your stay.

Anecdotes about Pamiers

Did you know how Pamiers got its name? On his return from the first crusade, Roger-Bernard II, Count of Foix, named the castle and its dependents ‘Castrum Appamiae’. This was in reference to Apamée, the area of Syria in which he fought his battles. Pamiers locals are known as Appaméens. In 1207, the Colloque de Pamiers marked the final encounter between the Cathars and the Catholic church. Another fun fact for you: Pamiers is the birthplace of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). The city pays tribute to the famous musician and composer every year with the Musiques au Pays de Gabriel Fauré festival.
