In the heartlands of Ariège, the city of Pamiers lies on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, which passes not far from your hotel. Feel free to walk a little of the route — it offers a lovely interlude in unspoiled natural surroundings. You’ll also get to see the Église du Vieux-Mas and its medieval garden. Another great way to explore the city is by its charming canals, and with a visit to Pamiers Cathedral. The surrounding area is home to a number of castles. Pamiers’ cultural calendar is packed full of great events. Some of these are no more than a stone’s throw from your hotel. In June, the city celebrates literature with its Salon au Livre. May, June, September and October sing with the sounds of the Musiques au Pays de Gabriel Fauré festival. All sorts of concerts and competitions happen during the two runs. If Latino vibes are more your thing, the Loco festival that takes place in July was made for you. Theater lovers, meanwhile, should get themselves along to Coulisses d'Automne in October.
Anecdotes about Pamiers
Did you know how Pamiers got its name? On his return from the first crusade, Roger-Bernard II, Count of Foix, named the castle and its dependents ‘Castrum Appamiae’. This was in reference to Apamée, the area of Syria in which he fought his battles. Pamiers locals are known as Appaméens.
In 1207, the Colloque de Pamiers marked the final encounter between the Cathars and the Catholic church.
Another fun fact for you: Pamiers is the birthplace of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). The city pays tribute to the famous musician and composer every year with the Musiques au Pays de Gabriel Fauré festival.
