Sète is a busy French seaside town unspoilt by tourism yet teeming with life. It dates back to 1660 when Louis XIV instructed his minister to find a new sea route for the export of Languedoc’s goods. The Knight of Clerville found Sète and the digging began. Today, the canals snake through the town creating a Venice-like feel, while the Mont-Saint-Clair provides a beautiful backdrop on one side and the sparkling Mediterranean dotted with colourful boats offers exquisite views on the other. Sète is built around the Mont-Saint-Clair, a 600-foot hill. It is home to the Thau lagoon, a salt water lake inhabited by oysters and mussel beds.

In adddition to the colourful canals and vibrant town centre, Sète also has eight miles of golden beach. So whether you want to enjoy fresh fish at a sea-front restaurant, lounge on the beach, or trek up Mont-Saint-Clair, this town has something for everyone. Sète is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

A two-day break
A two day break is a chance to get away from it all and Sète is the perfect place to do just that. Spend your first day strolling around the town, taking in the crisp sea air and watching the locals at work. On your second day, relax in the bright French sun on the wonderful golden sand.

A week-long stay
In a week you can enjoy a fun filled seaside break with all the trimmings. As it's a town ruled by boats, it wouldn’t be right to visit Sète without taking a boat trip. Whether you want to tour the town and its marine life on a glass-bottom boat or take a fishing trip in the Mediterranean. The Hotel Premiere Classe Sète is ideally situated just 10km from Sète centre, close to the action. Nature-lovers should take a trip up to the top of Mont-Saint-Clair. You can take a taxi or a bus if you don’t fancy the hike. The heavenly views of the ocean and the lagoon are well worth the journey. Be sure to try at least some of the many different fish dishes at a canalside restaurant while taking in the glorious scenes of everyday life in Sète.

A family holiday
Being a seaside town, Sete is ideal for youngsters and there are plenty of activities to keep them entertained. Take a trip through the town on the miniature train, visit the Fantasy Park or simply spend an afternoon fishing on the beach.

Sète is situated almost halfway between Béziers and Montpellier airports. The shuttle buses in Béziers will take you to the nearby train station where you can get a train directly to Sète. The shuttle bus at Montpellier will take you to a tram which will then take you to the train station where you can catch a train to Sète. There is a regular bus service within the town so you can get around during your holiday. There is also car hire and taxis available for those who prefer to travel more freely.

Fish is the staple dish in Sète and you can’t get it fresher than straight from the sea (or lagoon as the case maybe). Visit Les Demoiselles Dupuy to try the oysters and mussels this town is so famous for. This family run restaurant serves the best shellfish in Sète.

Sète is always eventful, but the most exciting event the town hosts is probably the annual water jousting tournament held at the St Louis Festival during the summer. The water jousting tradition dates back to 1666 and locals and tourists line the streets at the side of The Royal Canal to cheer on their favourite contenders. There's music, laughter and unforgettable scenes.

Interesting fact
Sète is a diverse town with a substantial Italian immigrant population. Many of the styles of cooking and restaurant are testament to this.
