Angers is a town rich with culture, character and beauty. The colours here are exuberantly vibrant and impressed the Department of Architecture and Heritage so much that it won the prestigious Villes d"Art et d"Histoire" award. The scenery and atmosphere is as romantic as it is breathtaking, making it the perfect place for couples. The Château d'Angers and its immaculate gardens are the stuff of fairytales.

Despite being a metropolitan city, there are green spaces aplenty and the wooden panelled houses are enough to charm even the most discerning tourist. Situated in the Pays de la Loire region Angers has survived the Black Death, numerous wars and has had several leaders, including King René of Anjou, who renovated it after war and disease damaged it. It is home to the Apocalypse Tapestry, which depicts the story of Apocalypse from the Bible in needlework and dates back to the 1300s.

A two-day break
Two days is just enough time to experience the treats Angers has to offer. Be sure to visit the town’s elaborate castle, Chateau d'Angers. It was first built in the 9th century and was expanded in the 13th century to its current size. Apart from being an incredibly beautiful building, it is also a museum and houses the spectacular Apocalypse Tapestry. Have a walk down to the Doutre quarter with its green spaces and lovely wood-framed houses.

A week-long stay
In a whole week you can take your time as you discover the magic of Angers. The Maison d'Adam (Adam's House), situated behind the cathedral, is probably the best and most beautiful example of a timber house from the Middle Ages. Continue strolling around the city and you will see the range of Renaissance and classical structures that adorn the streets. The Maison Bleue (blue house) is an impressive art deco building dating back to 1927. Needless to say, the architecture in Angers is as pleasant as the countryside and will have you marvelling for hours. The Premiere Classe Hotel Angers Ouest - Beaucouzé is the ideal base from which to discover Angers and its charming culture.

A family holiday

Angers is packed with activities for children, including go-kart racing, an aircraft museum and, best of all, Anjou Adventure Parc, an outdoor pursuits course and adventure playground set in lush green woodland.

Transport
Angers is easy to reach via the A11 from Paris and Nantes, the A87 from La Roche-sur-Yon and the A85 from Lyon and Tours. Angers-Loire Airport is the nearest airport to Angers and is 20km away. There is a train service into the town which also provides links to the surrounding areas. The high speed TGV train also runs through Angers, so the big cities can be reached quickly. There is a bus and a tram service within the town to help you get around during your visit. Car and bike hire is also available if you prefer.

Gastronomy
Angers
is a fertile and cosmopolitan destination with a range of restaurants to suit all budgets. Mets et Vins Plaisirs is a modern French restaurant with walls adorned with wine bottles and a menu containing a wide range of local cuisine and speciality dishes.

Events
The Premiers Plans festival is an annual film festival dedicated to European first films and is aimed at helping new directors to meet their audience. It is usually held in January and lasts for a week.

Interesting fact
Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, a commune in Angers' urban area, produces the famous Cointreau, a sweet orange liqueur, and has done since 1849.
