Le Mans is a city in France, located on the Sarthe river. Traditionally the capital of the province of Maine, it is now the capital of the Sarthe department as well as the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Le Mans. It is also located in the Pays de la Loire region. Most famous for its 24-hour Le Mans car race, its Romans walls and stunning labyrinth of winding alleyways means it is far more than just a motor city.

Le Mans was first mentioned by Ptolemy (AD90-168) as the Roman city Vindinium, the capital of the Aulerci which was a sub tribe of the Aedui. As the principal city of Maine, Le Mans was the stage for struggles in the 11th century between the counts of Anjou and the dukes of Normandy. When the Normans had control of Maine, William the Conqueror was able to invade England successfully, however in 1069 the citizens revolted and expelled the Normans. Geoffrey V of Anjou married Mathilde in the city's cathedral, where Henry II Plantagenet, king of England, was also baptized.

A two-day trip
Two days is just enough time to get to know all that the city of Le Mans has to offer. Premiere Classe Hotel Le Mans Centre – Palais des Congre is located in the city centre, just a short walk from the old town, where you will want to spend your first day. With its cobbled streets and half-timbered house fronts it has been a film setting, while the stunning Cathedral Saint Julien and remnants of the Roman wall wont fail to impress. For your second day why not explore the city’s history through its excellent museums, such as Musee de Tesse, the fine arts museum, and Musee de la reine Berengere, the Le Mans history museum.

A one-week break
A whole week is the perfect amount of time to really get to know Le Mans as well as the region of Pays de la Loire. Why not head to the region's capital, Nantes, which has plenty to see. The city’s star attraction is the large castle, Chateau des ducs de Bretagne, while the Cathedral of Saint Peters and Paul is also well worth a visit. Another city to visit in the region is Angers which also has a castle, Chateau d’Angers, as well as a beautiful old quarter.

A family holiday
Le Mans
is a great place to take the whole family. Whether it is witnessing one of the many motor races that take place in the city throughout the year, experiencing a Le Mans FC football match or relaxing in Arboretum de la Grand Prée or Jardin des Plantes du Mans there will be something for everybody !

Transport
Le Mans'nearest airport is Aeroport Tours Val de Loire, 100km outside of the city, which offers flights to London and Porto. The city’s train station is on the TGV line with connections to Paris, Brittany, Bordeaux and Lille, while regional trains head to the neighbouring towns of Tours, Angers and Laval. If you are driving then A11 runs from Paris to Nantes via Le Mans and the A81 heads west towards Rennes. There are regular buses in the city while a tram runs from the university on the west of town, through the centre and towards the east.

Gastronomy
The region around Le Mans is known for its pork, duck and chicken dishes. Perhaps the city's most popular traditional dish is a type of shredded pork pate known as 'rillettes'. This is served cold, in pots, and usually eaten as an appetizer, spread on toast or bread. Look out for this and other local delicacies, including 'poulets de Loué' and 'chapons du Mans'. Other favourites from the region include its ‘Beurre Blanc’ (a vinegar, butter and shallots sauce often served with fish) and the Pays de la Loire Port Salut cheese.

Events
Le Mans has many different events to attend throughout the year however there is no doubting which is the biggest. The 24 Hours of Le Mans, held every June since the first in 1923, is a car race around the streets of the city and is the pinnacle in French motor racing. There are also many other motoring events throughout the year taking place in the city's famous circuits. Other highlights include the Europa Jazz Festival in May, the Onion Fair in September and the Bebop’n’roll alternative music festival in November.

Interesting fact
The 24 Hours of Le Mans was designed as a contrast to the Grand Prix. Instead of focusing on the ability of a car company to build the fastest machines, it would instead concentrate on the ability of manufacturers to build sporty yet reliable cars.
