Beauvais is the capital city of the Oise department in the Picardy region of France. This north-eastern French city is tucked neatly at the foot of hills adorned with trees. Beauvais has a rich textile history which dates back to medieval times and, even today, is often dubbed the “City of Tapestry Making”.

The Cathedral of St Pierre, which dates back to the 11th century, dominates the town centre. This spectacular gothic structure has been rebuilt several times over the years and still has no spire or nave. However, the glasswork is breathtaking and it still remains the epicentre of Beauvais. It houses beautiful tapestries which are testament to the city’s textile history. This is a bustling city with elaborate architecture and impressive art. It is surrounded by fleeting ramparts and there is plenty to do whether you are here for a week or a short break.

A two-day break
In two days you can uncover some of the wonderful treasures that this beautiful city has to offer. The Cathedral of St Pierre is in the heart of Beauvais and you can’t visit this city without going to the Cathedral. It is a magnificent building with intricate detail and features the world’s highest Gothic chancel and an impressive collection of tapestries. Visit the local market on a Saturday or Wednesday and pick up some local textiles.

A week-long stay
A week is more than enough time to discover Beauvais. Visit the National Tapestry Works and Gallery, which is not far from The Premiere Classe Hotel Beauvais. This is the industry the city is famous for and houses superb exhibitions and intricate tapestries. Nature lovers should visit the Grand Chateau of Troissereux, a beautiful house set in lush gardens with two canals. It is worth strolling around this city if only to see the ornate facades of the historic buildings.

A family holiday
The recently built Aquaspace waterpark in Beauvais is the ideal place for a day out with the family. It has a sports pool, a diving pool, a lagoon, two water slides, an outdoor river, a Jacuzzi and a hammam. The outdoor area has a lawn beach and cafeteria, which are especially great in the summer.

Beauvais has its own airport - the third biggest in Paris - and it serves many of the budget airlines. It is less than an hour from the airport and shuttle buses are available. The main motorways into the city are the A1 from Paris and Lille, and then the A16. There is a train service within the city and taxis and buses are also available. You can also hire a bike or a car if you prefer.

Beauvais has places to eat to suit all tastes. There is everything from pizzerias and bistros to gourmet restaurants with luxurious surroundings. For local and speciality cuisine, visit The Oise. They specialise in mustards flavoured with honey, cider or beer, and both savoury and sweet tarts.

As a bustling city there are events and festivals held in Beauvais throughout the year. The Sound and Light Show, usually held in autumn, sees the city’s famous gothic cathedral brought to life by a sound and light show.BeauvaisFilm Festival is held in November and celebrates European film. There is a blues festival held in the city in March.

Interesting fact
Beauvais is home to the tallest and one of the most elaborate gothic cathedrals in the world.
