Annecy is a town in France’s Rhône-Alpes region, in the south-east of the country. Annecy lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35km south of Geneva. The Fier River marks Annecy’s northern border. It is surrounded by several mountains including Le Semnoz, La Tournette and the Parmelan. Strict environmental laws introduced in the 1960s have led to Lake Annecy being described as Europe’s cleanest lake.

From 1219 Annecy was the capital of the country of Geneva. Following the fall of the Counts of Geneva, Annecy became the possession of the House of Savoy in 1401, and in 1444 the Princes of Savoy made it the capital of the region. The Savoy region was conquered by the French during the French Revolution. In 1815 the Bourbon Restoration saw Annecy returned to the Kingdom of Sardinia (heir of the Duchy of Savoy). It wasn’t until Sardinia was sold to France in 1860 that again became part of France.

Two-day break
The lake is Annecy’s most obvious attraction and is just half and hour walk away from Premiere Classe Hotel Annecy Sud – Cran Gevrier. But the town is full of culture for you to experience as well. Visit the Musee Chateau d’Annecy, a fascinating collection of historical artefacts accompanied by a changing art exhibition. If you want still more art try the Conservatoire Art et Histoire.

Seven-day break
While Annecy has an obvious natural focus with its lake and surrounding countryside, the town itself has some great things to offer as well. The Basilique de la Visitation, also just a half-hour walk from the Premiere Classe Hotel Annecy Sud – Cran Gevrier, is a wonderful historic church. The Palais de l’Isle is located in a tiny island on a canal in Annecy is a fascinating place to stroll around. The triangular building housed the Lord of Annecy.

Family Holiday
The easiest way to keep your family entertained in Annecy is with the host activities available on and around its lake. These range from bike trails taking you winding through the beautiful scenery that encircles the lake, to leisurely boat tours taking you across the lake, to paddle boats and beaches packed full of fun for kids. If the weather turns against you, you might want to pop in to the Marvellous World of Alpine Miniatures for an afternoon of entertainment.

Transport
Annecy has a bus service that has its main station next to the train station. Bus services will take you to most of the towns surrounding Lake Annecy for days out. The train station has connections to Aix-les-Bains, Chambery, Saint-Gervais, Lyon and Paris.

Food
The cuisine of the Rhone-Alpes derives from its mixed landscape of mountainous areas and low lying regions. Expect convivial food ranging from Raclette to Cheese Fondue from Savoy and more refined specialities from the cites like Quenelle. Of course, this is also a great opportunity to sample some of the world famous Rhone-Alpes wine.

Events
Annecy
has hosted the Annecy International Animation Film Festival since 1960. Initially the festival was held every two years but in 1998 it became an annual event. Films using a variety of animation techniques compete to win prizes in a number of categories

Did You Know ?
Lake Annecy
is France’s second biggest lake after Lac du Bourget, providing that the portion of Lake Geneva that is in France is excluded. The lake was formed around 18,000 years ago when the large alpine glaciers melted and is fed by many rivers running down form the mountains that surround it. It is also fed by a powerful underground source which enter the lake 82m deep.
