During the Normandy Landings in June 1944, Lisieux was heavily bombed: 80% of the city was destroyed, and 800 people killed. However, the traditional, half-timbered Normandy houses survived the ordeal, as well as various monuments. The Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse narrowly escaped. An order was actually given for it to be destroyed, for it had been housing German soldiers. Ultimately though, a counter order confirmed that there were no soldiers left there, and the building was left unharmed.
