A significant fact about the history of Mont-de-Marsan
Mont-de-Marsan was once a Protestant enclave. In the 16th century, when Martin Luther proposed a reformation of the church, a number of religious figures and residents of all walks of life converted to Protestantism in Landes. In 1562, Mont-de-Marsan was rocked by the French Wars of Religion, which saw the town swing between the Catholic and Protestant camps until a peace treaty was signed in 1598.
