TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Pau?

Two-day trip to Pau
A week-long visit to Pau and the surrounding area
A family stay in Pau
Pau is perfect for a weekend adventure. Not far from your Première Classe hotel, you can stroll between the lower town that borders the Gave de Pau, and the upper town that dominates the landscape. There’s also a funicular railway connecting the two halves of the city. The old town still has all its medieval charm, as well as the castle where Henry the Great was born. Continue your sightseeing tour with a trip to the Musée Bernadotte, the former residence of King Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte of Sweden.

Once comfortably settled in your room, you can head out to explore the hidden gems of Pau. A week is the perfect amount of time to investigate the city and its heritage at your leisure. The castle, the old town, the Musée Bernadotte and the Église Notre Dame immerse visitors in Bearnese tradition. There are also many outings to enjoy: a walk around the city’s medieval ruins, a late-night visit to Lescar by torchlight, bike rides along the river, and more. Not far from Pau, and your hotel, Tarbes, Lourdes and Jurançon make for exciting days out.

Having been awarded the French “Famille Plus” label, Pau is the perfect destination for a vacation with the kids. When you check in to your affordable hotel, check with our team and the tourist office to see what family-friendly sporting, cultural and fun activities are on during your stay — they change with the seasons. Tours especially for kids are available, as are puzzles to get them having fun while they get to know the city. It’s worth noting that there are also ski slopes less than a two-hour drive from our hotels.

Sampling Pau’s culinary specialities

Lovers of good food will be hard-pressed to resist the delicacies that Béarn has to offer. A peaceful night’s sleep in your Première Classe hotel room, followed by an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is the ideal way to prepare for a day of delicious food. Foie gras, duck confit, sheep milk cheese and Bayonne ham — which despite its name actually comes from the region around Pau — are a sensory experience like no other. It’s also impossible to pass up on a helping of Béarnaise sauce, with its tantalizing aroma of shallots and tarragon. Coucougnettes du Vert Galant, a traditional Pau candy, and Jurançon wine add a touch of sweetness to proceedings.

The best things to do in Pau

Fiercely proud of its Bearnese heritage and traditions, Pau hosts a myriad of events celebrating its identity each year. At the end of August, the Hestiv’oc festival showcases cultures from Occitania and the Pyrenees with concerts, recitals, theater and more. In May, car lovers flock to the Pau Grand Prix. Over the summer, the city comes alive with the annual ferias. Processions and fireworks accompany these festive, cheerful celebrations. Don’t miss out — join the party during your stay in our Première Classe hotels.

Did you know?

Legend has it that to make the future King Henry IV strong and brave, his mother sang Bearnese songs to him as she rocked him in his cradle. It is also said that when the child was born, Henri d’Albret — his grandfather — rubbed a clove of garlic across his lips and fed him a few drops of Jurançon. At the time, this was believed to protect from illness. Henry IV is also the reason that Jurançon is now so famous. Vineyards and estates can be found only a few miles from our hotels.
