TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Montauban?

Two-day visit to Montauban
See Montauban in seven days
Family visit to Montauban
A short stay in Montauban is all you need to take in the main sights of this charming red-brick city, which was built to resemble the classic fortified towns found in the south-west of France. Explore rows upon rows of private mansions in the lanes of the old town, and fall in love with its authentic atmosphere. The Musée Ingres-Bourdelle is also worth a visit, to see a wonderful collection of artwork by local painters Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Antoine Bourdelle exhibited in a building that once served as the residence of the bishops of Montauban. After resting up at the Montauban Première Classe hotel, take a stroll through the different neighborhoods of the city to soak up the atmosphere, and wander along the Canal de Montech.
Staying in Montauban for a whole week? Make the most of it by exploring the wealth of treasures in this typical south-western French city, which is jam-packed with art and heritage. Take your time in the stunning Place Nationale, a must-see meeting place, as well as on the Pont Vieux, one of the city’s oldest landmarks. Less than 20 miles from your Première Classe hotel are some of the most beautiful villages in all of Tarn-et-Garonne, such as Bruniquel, Puycelsi and Penne, with the remains of Penne castle towering overhead. Should you get the urge to go further afield, there are plenty of interesting towns and cities nearby: Toulouse, of course, not to mention Albi and Cahors.
With its mild climate, stunning architecture and outdoors attractions, Montauban is the perfect place for a family vacation. After breakfast at the Première Classe hotel, visit the Victor Brun Natural History Museum to see a remarkable collection of stuffed birds from around the world. If you’d rather get outdoors, Tarn-et-Garonne is packed with spots that are perfect for walking and exploring during your family stay: the banks of the Tarn and the Garonne for one, as well as learning farms and pony clubs. Another option is to take your kids back in time to the Middle Ages at the Au Castel des Chevaliers medieval park.

A fact about the history of Montauban to store in your memory bank

The painter Ingres, who was born in Montauban in 1770, is a big part of the area’s heritage. He studied art at the Academy of Toulouse, then traveled to Paris to become a protégé of Jacques-Louis David. As he developed an ideal of beauty closer to the Italian tradition than French Classicism, he moved to Rome in 1806. He painted some of his most famous works there, such as La Grande Baigneuse and La Grande Odalisque. Ingres wanted to leave his art to his hometown as his legacy, so he founded the Ingres Museum in Montauban in 1828. To delve deeper into Montauban’s heritage, book a room in the city’s Première Classe hotel.
