Orleans, located in north central France, is the capital of the country’s Centre region. The city is on the northern bend of the Loire river and as such has always been a place of strategic importance. Today there are five bridges in Orleans that cross the Loire River, Pont de l’Europe, Pont du Marechal Joffre, Pont George-V, Pont Rene-Thinat and Pont de Vierzon.

The city was destroyed in 52BC by Julius Caesar and then rebuilt by the emperor Aurelian, who named it Aurelianum – city of Aurelian – which then eventually evolved into Orleans. As one of only three points at which to cross the Loire during the middle ages, the other two being Paris and Rouen, Orleans became one of medieval France’s richest cities. In 1429 Joan of Arc liberated the city from the Plantagenets. The city’s inhabitant remain grateful to her to this day, calling her ‘the maid of Orleans’.

Two-day break
Just a 15-minute drive from the Premiere Classe Orleans - La Chapelle Saint Mesmin is the Cathedral ste-Croix, the city’s impressive gothic cathedral. It is most famous for being visited by Joan of Arc, who attended mass there. Her story can now be seen in the stained glass. Near the cathedral is the Musee des Beaux Arts. Founded in 1797 it is one of the oldest provincial museums in France and houses paintings from the 15th – 20th century.

Seven-day break
With a little more time in the area why not take a guided tour with Odyssee en Val de Loire. The company offers a range of guided tours, from simply guiding you around Orleans, to more far reaching tours that will keep you busy for either half a day or a whole day. The guides know the city’s history intimately and speak several languages. You might also want to take the opportunity t get some exercise on your holiday as Orleans is on the Loire cycle path.

Family Holiday
Just 10-minutes drive from the Premiere Classe Orleans - La Chapelle Saint Mesmin is the Mison de Jeanne d’Arc, a replica of the house that Joan of Arc stayed in while she visited the city. This is a great introduction for children to a fascinating part of French history. Also in the centre of the town is the History or Archaeology Museum, a great family day out that is suitable for all ages.

Transport
The city is served by both a bus network and a series of trams. It also has two main train stations, Gare d’Orleans and Gare des Aubrais-Orléans, the latter being the one that most long distant trains will stop at and offers connections to Paris, Lille and Tours among others.

Food
The Centre region is a heaven for lovers of French country food, or Cuisine du Terroir. Expect tasty pork from local pig farms and gourmet goat’s cheese. It is also a great spot for sweet treats such as the famous tarte tatin.

Events
On the summer solstice Orleans, like many French cities, celebrates the Fete de la Musique, revelling in a wide variety of musical performances. If you’re lucky enough to be in the city for Bastille day you’re in for an impressive fireworks display and general party atmosphere. The Open Air Cinema Festival of Orleans happens every August and shows both Hollywood blockbusters and rare independent films.

Did You Know?
The duchy of Orleans was once the largest duchy in France. Thanks to inheritance from great families and strategic marriages the dukes of Orleans were able to accumulate great wealth. One Duke, Philippe Égalité, is said to have been the richest man in the world during his lifetime.
