A vibrant metropolis with all the trimmings of a thoroughly modern city, Geneva actually has a long history stretching back to Roman occupation. Today the picture of neutrality, it was once the site of much religious tension. Like many cities, it changed hands several times, only becoming part of the Swiss Confederation in 1815. Straddling the French-Swiss border and nestled between the Alps and Jura mountains, this city packs the punch of two nations !

The second most-popular city in Switzerland has been rated highly for the quality of life it offers to residents (as well as visitors); and its economic and diplomatic prowess within the world give Geneva plenty to boast about. Bursting with historical monuments and modern treats to explore, a trip to Geneva with Premiere Classe hotels will not disappoint. Stay with Premiere Classe Geneva- Saint Genis Pouilly for a unique experience which won’t break the bank !

A two-day break
Start your two-day break with a visit to the mid-19th century Basilica of Notre Dame and the Saint Germain Church, one of Geneva’s oldest religious sites. The former Arsenal houses the state’s archives and contains some stunning mosaics and medieval cannons. Then why not relax in the botanical gardens or take a look around the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art. Then finish off by spending some time at the Malbuisson Clock.

A week-long stay
If you’re staying for longer, explore the 16th-century town hall, where many a country’s fate has been sealed through the signing of treaties and trade agreements. Then visit the Saint Peter Cathedral, one of 82 sights or monuments of national significance. Then head further afield to Rousseau Island, now a park connected to the mainland, but previously a bastion of the city, named after famous philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Top off your break by wandering around the Plainpalais cemetery. Pick up some souvenirs at the fleamarket on the Place de Plainpalais.

A family holiday
Geneva and its surroundings are great places to visit, regardless of age. You can easily spend a couple days enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery offered by Lake Leman, the largest lake in Europe. Or why not take your kids to explore the archaeological remains of Temple Saint-Gervais. The city is also full to burst with interesting, fun museums including the History of Science Museum and the Museum of Geneva Military History. Whatever the weather, there is something to do.

Fly to Geneva Aéroport with most flight carriers and if you’re staying with Premiere Classe hotels, you can easily get out of the airport without crossing the Swiss border by using the French section. The city is served by the Geneva Cornavin Train Station with French, Swiss and Italian trains. The city can be explored by taxi-boat, bike, bus, train and car.

Produce cultivated from Lake Geneva and the mountain air fills the city’s market gardens with a host of colours and flavours, which naturally translate into a huge variety of dishes. Look out for Longeole, a fennel-flavoured sausage, and various types of traditional fondue. Known as the gastronomic capital of Switzerland, you will be spoilt for choice wherever you go.

The defeat of the Savoy troops in 1602 is joyously commemorated each year in December. Visitors are allowed to enter the old fortifications under the city’s cathedral for the only time in the year and a bonfire takes place in the Cathedral Square. A torchlight parade and period costume add to the atmosphere of this unique event.

Interesting fact
houses the European Headquarters of the United Nations, in a building known as the Palace of Nations, which previously contained the League of Nations. Known as the city of peace, Geneva plays host to over 250 permanent Non-Governmental organisations including one of the oldest - the International Committee of the Red Cross which was established there in 1863.
