The highest mountain in the Alps at 15,782 ft above sea level, Mont Blanc ia a popular destination for those seeking adventurous pursuits such as hiking, snowboarding and skiing. Around 20,000 mountaineers climb one of the several routes to the summit every year, with the first recorded ascent on 8 August 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard. By reaching the top, they claimed prize money offered by Horace Benedicy de Saussure in 1760.

Mont Blanc
is close to both Courmayeur in Italy, and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, which are linked by the 11.6km Mont Blanc Tunnel, completed in 1965. Premiere Classe Hotels serve as a perfect base for anyone wanting to explore Chamonix, which is well-loved by winter-sports enthusiasts and was the location of the first Winter Olympics in 1924.

A two-day break:

A trip to the summit of Mont Blanc can be done in two days, especially if staying in Chamonix. There are many packages, so do some research to find out which is best for you. There are plenty of alternative options to get your heart racing, such as the more unusual ski jeering, where the skier is pulled along by a horse and steers himself along, often through a slalom course or in a head-to-head race.

A week-long stay:

After climbing Mont Blanc, the rest of the week can be spent exploring the surrounding region. Staying in Chamonix is ideal for visiting elsewhere, such as Courmayeur in Italy, which is easily reached through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Here visit the beautiful Val Ferret, which has a number of cafés on the side of the river. A trip to the cosmopolitan city of Geneva is also easily done in a day. You can even stay at the Premiere Classe Genève - Prévessin hotel to make you trip hassle-free.

A family holiday:

Mont Blanc is a perfect break for all the family, whether in winter, where you can all spend time on the slopes, or for a summer holiday where you can enjoy the beach at Lac de Passy, 25 minutes down the valley. A great family activity is a trip on the famous little red train which takes you on a ride from the centre of Chamonix up to the Mer de Glace, and to a spectacular view of the glacier.

If staying in Chamonix, flying to Geneva airport is the easiest option, with many shuttle buses running between the two throughout the day. Chamonix-Mont Blanc station is easily reached during the ski season by taking the Eurostar to Paris and changing for a TGV train to the south of France. Cable cars also provide staggering views of the mountains.

After a long day on the slopes, hungry mouths can find plenty of mountain-side restaurants serving delicacies based on local ingredients, including tartiflette (potatoes and bacon smothered with melted cheese), and raclette, which is similar to fondue. Croûte Savoyarde is also a popular dish, which is toasted bread soaked in white wine and baked with melted cheese.

The area is lively all year round, but if visiting Mont Blanc in the summer, the Chamonix Adventure Festival which takes place at the end of August is well worth a visit. This brings together adventurers and enthusiasts to showcase their talents through film, photography and art, and offers the chance to join in film and photography courses.

Interesting fact:

The first woman to reach the summit of Mont Blanc was Marie Paradis, on 14 July 1808. Allegedly, Paradis climbed the mountain having heard she would be given gifts for doing so. The ascent was not an easy one, and she had to be dragged and pushed by guides to ensure she reached the top.
